Microanatomy of cells, tissues, and organs
Equipped with cutting edge technologies, and staffed by a CSMLS certified histotechnologist, the Histology Facility provides both routine and specialized histological support to the Lower Mainland research community, including specific services listed below, and assay development and optimization.
Processing and Embedding
Parrafin embedding, OCT embedding for cryosectioning, methylmethacrylate for electron microscopy.
Sectioning
Paraffin, frozen, methylmethacrylate, decalcification (acid)
Staining
Histological staining (see below), immunohistochemistry (peroxidase and/or alkaline phosphatase), immunofluorescence, TUNEL staining, in situ hybridization (ISH).
Histological Stains Available
General morphology: Hematoxylin and Eosin, Toluidine Blue, Giemsa, TTC staining.
Carbohydrates: Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS), PAS/diastase (glycogen), Alcian blue, Alcian blue with PAS.
Connective Tissue: Trichromes (Masson, Gomori), Movat’s Pentachrome, Gomori’s Aldehyde Fuchsin, Verhoeff/Van Gieson, Picrosirius Red, Gomori’s silver impregnation
Lipids: Oil Red O
Microorganisms: Gram, Brown and Brenn, Zeihl-Neelsen, Grocott
Nucleic Acids: Feulgen
Intracellular Granules: Masson Fontana (melanin), Von Kossa (calcium), amyloid, Perl’s Prussian Blue (hemosiderin).
Hematology: Hansel’s (Eosinophils), Wright’s
