Don Sin received his medical degree at University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada (1991), completed medical residency in general medicine and respiratory medicine at University of Alberta (in 1995) and received a master’s of public health degree at Harvard University, Boston, USA (1997). His first faculty position was as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of Alberta in 1999. He was recruited to the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2004 as a Canada Research Chair in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and a GlaxoSmithKline/St. Paul’s Foundation Professor of COPD. He is also a senior clinical scholar with the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, an Associate Professor of Medicine at UBC, and the Associate Head of Research at UBC Department of Medicine.

He is a staff respirologist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and holds several grants as the Principal or co-Principal Investigator all relating to COPD. He has published ~130 peer-reviewed articles and has written numerous editorials and book chapters. His main research focus is to discover novel biomarkers to improve the care and diagnosis of patients with COPD, which currently is the 4th leading cause of death worldwide. Additionally, his laboratory is engaged in projects to better understand why women (especially young women) are particularly vulnerable to COPD and lung cancer. He serves as an editorial board member of several journals including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Chest, European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences Journal, and Clinical Respiratory Journal.
